A picnic in the great outdoors can be a great idea on its own, but it’s the right musical accompaniment that makes it a truly memorable experience. And when, for example, the Vienna Philharmonic performs as the guest orchestra, the day quickly becomes a true highlight of late summer. This idea could soon become a reality for you, as a special classical open-air festival will soon take place at Grafenegg Castle.
Just about 50 minutes northwest of Vienna lies a place that offers exactly this combination. The grounds surrounding the historic building are no longer just an ordinary park, but a 32-hectare arboretum. Here, you can first stroll among 300-year-old trees before the instruments are tuned in the evening and the music enchants you.
English architecture meets contemporary history
The setting could hardly be more impressive, as the majestic Grafenegg Castle dates back to the historic year of 1435. It is surrounded by a wide moat, making you feel as if you’ve traveled back in time.
In the 19th century, it was completely redesigned in the style of Romantic Historicism, modeled after English country estates. Ever since, the complex has captivated visitors with its delicate battlements, making it one of Lower Austria’s most frequently photographed landmarks.
A steel origami structure as a concert stage
In the middle of this historic complex stands a striking architectural contrast. The so-called “Wolkenturm” (Cloud Tower) is a 23-meter-high open-air stage that resembles a modern steel origami sculpture.
For exactly 20 years, this building has been the acoustic centerpiece of the concert season. From August 14 to September 6, 2026, the festival’s 20th anniversary will be celebrated there, attracting classical music fans from all over the world. This year’s program once again features very special orchestras and soloists. After all, this anniversary must be celebrated.

New insights and completely sold-out performances
In addition to the major evening events, there will also be a new feature for the audience in 2026. Every Saturday during the festival at 3:30 p.m., classical concerts will now also take place in the new Rudolf Buchbinder Hall.
This state-of-the-art venue in the old riding hall offers a superb view directly onto the castle park. Anyone wanting tickets for this event will have to hurry, because the festive opening is already completely sold out.
For the remaining dates, you can snag regular tickets priced between 60 and 120 euros—provided you get them in time. With that, nothing stands in the way of a musical summer evening.
