Going to a festival usually means securing tickets months in advance and digging deep into your pockets. In Vienna, it’s completely different, because for Europe’s largest open-air festival, you don’t need a reservation or a ticket. Just head to the Danube, order a drink, and you’re instantly right in the thick of the action. Here you’ll find all the important info you need to be fully prepared for the annual midsummer party in the city.
Space for a quarter of a million people

The annual Danube Island Festival will open its doors again from July 3 to 5, 2026, transforming the riverbank into a massive 4.5-kilometer-long event zone. The site is designed to be so spacious that it can accommodate an average of 250,000 people at a time. Over the course of the entire weekend, as many as three million visitors often flock to the island.
Many are already wondering who will provide this year’s musical highlights. The full lineup for the stages is traditionally announced officially at the end of May. A look back at last year, however, shows the festival’s caliber: in 2025, the lineup featured international and local stars such as Rag’n’Bone Man, Milky Chance, JOSH., and Kim Wilde. We’ll of course keep you updated here as well. Until then, you can also check out the event’s official Instagram channel .

18 themed islands for breaks and activities
If you need a break from the loud music, there are plenty of alternatives around the concert areas. The grounds are divided into 18 different themed islands that offer far more than just partying. At the many food stands, you can sample local culinary delights or get active at the activity stations.
Families are also catered for, as a special children’s program with shows awaits the youngest guests on a separate island. Due to the festival’s enormous size, a stroll through it is almost like a short hike. So, if you’re smart, you’ll take public transportation (the Öffis) and, above all, bring comfortable shoes.
