Landmarks and Royal Legends
The most famous photo subject in the Wachau is undoubtedly the blue-and-white tower of Dürnstein Abbey. The magnificent Baroque tower stands directly on the banks of the Danube and, with its unusual color scheme, is considered a special architectural gem. Provost Hieronymus Übelbacher had the complex remodeled in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The vibrant color symbolizes the sky and the connection to the divine.
If you look a little further up, you’ll see the majestic ruins of Dürnstein Castle, which towers high above the town. It harbors a famous historical tale: In the winter of 1192–1193, the English King Richard the Lionheart was held captive here by Duke Leopold V. Legend has it that his faithful minstrel, Blondel, eventually tracked him down by traveling from castle to castle and singing the king’s favorite song everywhere he went .
Only after a massive ransom was paid was the king released. The climb up to the ruins takes about 20 minutes and rewards you with an unforgettable panoramic view of the entire Danube Valley.
Traveling from Vienna to Dürnstein
The trip from Vienna to Dürnstein, just under 80 kilometers away, is straightforward. By car, it takes about an hour via the Stockerau Expressway (S5) and the B3, depending on traffic conditions.
You canalso reach the town comfortably and in an eco-friendly wayby public transportation. The easiest way is to take the train (ÖBB) from Vienna’s Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof or Hauptbahnhof to Krems an der Donau, which takes about an hour. From Krems, bus line 715 will take you directly to Dürnstein in about 15 to 20 minutes.
During the summer months, there’s also a particularly romantic alternative: continuing your journey from Krems to Dürnstein on the historic Wachau Railway or by ferry across the Danube. In total, you should plan about 1.5 hours for the trip using public transportation.
