Just under two hours from Vienna lies an alpine gorge system that is rightly considered a natural monument. Although the region attracts many visitors, the hike is well worth it for any nature lover.
The trail is now very well developed, although the paths have retained their wild character . For this reason, you should definitely pack sturdy shoes to ensure a secure footing on the damp wooden walkways.
The perfect start in Wienerbruck

The best place to start your tour is right at the Ötscher-Basis Nature Park Center. There, you can park your car for a daily fee of 5,– €. After paying the 10,60 € entrance fee, you’ll finally set off on the wooden walkways. The entrance fee is used to protect the area and maintain the trails.
At first, you’ll follow the trail downstream, with the sound of the Ötscherbach stream constantly accompanying you. You’ll also be hiking along historic paths that were once used by lumberjacks. The deep gorges in the rock offer a pleasant, cool respite even in the height of summer.
Past the waterfall all the way to Mitterbach

The trail leads you deeper and deeper into the ravines, allowing you to experience the rugged rock faces up close. An absolute highlight is the detour to the Mirafall, where the water plunges meters high over the cascades. That’s why you should definitely plan this detour before continuing your hike toward Mitterbach.
It’s best to pack a tasty snack like quark strudel in your backpack, because the focus here is purely on nature. While there are places to stop for refreshments, a break on the riverbank is simply priceless. After all, bread tastes twice as good with a view of the crystal-clear, turquoise water.
