Just about a 75-minute drive from the outskirts of Vienna stands a magnificent 19th-century Neo-Gothic structure. That is precisely where Lednice Castle is located ; the complex once served as the Liechtenstein family’s stately summer residence.
From an Aristocratic Estate to a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Initially, the complex consisted of a classic moated castle, but over time it underwent extensive renovations. Today, the architecture is in the Tudor style, and the intricate wood carvings in the reception rooms are particularly striking. Furthermore, the entire area, covering nearly 200 square kilometers, is part of the expansive Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape.
Consequently, the site was later added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Equally noteworthy is the adjacent historic Palm House, which was built between 1843 and 1845. Today, over 250 different plant species from tropical regions still thrive beneath the massive cast-iron and glass structure.

As soon as you continue your walk through the expansive English-style castle park, you’ll come across an architectural surprise. In the midst of the lake landscape, a 60-meter-high minaret soars into the sky, even though the structure was built as early as the late 18th century. While climbing the 302 steps requires a bit of stamina, once at the top you’ll be rewarded with a sweeping panoramic view of the entire park landscape.
However, you don’t necessarily have to explore the vast grounds on foot. Instead, you can enjoy leisurely tours on small wooden boats that regularly navigate the branching tributaries of the Thaya River. As you glide peacefully past the man-made islands, you can relax and take in the historic scenery from the water.
