Do you actually know what goes on behind the walls of the Europahaus? Discover the history and the events that take place here. And why it might be exciting for you: In 1846, the last wolf of the Vienna Woods was killed in the forests surrounding what is now the 14th district. The base for such stately hunts was a two-story Baroque building that has a lot to offer architecturally. Originally given as a gift by Empress Maria Theresa around 1750 to a successful military supplier, the imposing estate was designed by none other than Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach.
After more than 100 years as the summer residence of the Princes of Esterházy, the property changed hands several times. Among the owners from 1894 onward was Dr. Heinrich von Miller zu Aichholz, after whom the estate is named. Although its use as quarters for French occupation troops after World War II left significant damage to the frescoes, the building was saved from decay in the 1950s. Today, Miller-Aichholz Castle is part of the Europahaus complex and is actively used for educational purposes. But that’s not all.

A space for students and guests

The extensive grounds are currently used by the Austrian Young Workers’ Movement (ÖJAB). Visitors to the park will find, in addition to the palace , a modern conference center, a hotel, and a real treat for architecture enthusiasts. A very well-preserved 18th-century orangery now serves as a light-filled hall with a direct view of majestic trees designated as natural monuments.
As a venue for European encounters, well-known politicians such as Leopold Figl and Bruno Kreisky have visited the house. The non-profit organization ÖJAB uses the site as a student residence and supports socially disadvantaged youth. The ongoing hotel and event operations ensure the preservation of the historic buildings and finance these social projects.
