Traveling on vacation while you sleep? No problem with a night train! Close your eyes in the evening in the music metropolis of Vienna and wake up in the most beautiful places in Europe. The transport network in and around Vienna is already very well developed, and night trains are also available. However, the lack of a train network in Europe makes spontaneous journeys difficult. What’s more, night trains usually cost significantly more than a faster flight. This means that traveling by train is often not a real alternative. However, a new night train from Berlin start-up Nox aims to change this.
How expensive will the new night train be?

One thing is clear: very few train journeys are a bargain. But Nox’s night trains are supposed to be comparatively cheap – the owners are currently promising that a journey will be cheaper than a flight! A single cabin therefore costs just 79 euros, while a double cabin is expected to cost 149 euros.
These prices would be on a par with a standard flight and offer a real alternative. This is one of the company’s main approaches, which aims to fill a gap in the travel offer. Because even though train travel is much better for the planet, it is usually no match for the offerings of low-cost airlines.
When will the trains start running?
The startup Nox has announced that the first trains will be running from 2027. By 2036, 100 cities are to be served from Berlin, including Paris, Rome, Stockholm and Vienna.
Not only a competitive price, but also maximum comfort should convince travelers. Instead of sleeping in six-person compartments, there will be private cabins – either in pairs or alone, you can make yourself comfortable in two-meter-long beds. There will also be a seating area with a table and window. And there will also be storage space for your luggage.
Other night trains are already departing from Vienna

If you don’t want to wait that long, you can of course already use the available night trains in Austria. The Nightjet runs from Vienna to Amsterdam, Paris, Bregenz, Hamburg or Rome. Prices are usually in the upper budget range, but newer trains also have private sleeping cabins.
In addition to its green urban redevelopment, Austria is also considered a pioneer in the night train segment in Europe. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) in particular has massively expanded its night train services in recent years and operates the largest interconnected network of night trains in Europe. And the new night train can add another – probably cheaper – alternative to the offer.
