There are many lakes in and around Vienna that brighten up our summer. But they are usually not particularly quiet and natural – these bathing lakes are already well-known and attract many visitors. So how about a real insider tip among the lakes in Austria? We went on a search and found a special destination that you probably haven’t heard of yet. Find out where the secret bathing lake is and what you can experience there here.
Where is the bathing lake located and what makes it so special?
The secret bathing lake we are talking about is Lake Lunz in Lower Austria. It is located in the middle of the Mostviertel mountains and offers an incredibly beautiful view – it’s worth the journey for that alone! The crystal-clear waters of Lake Lunz are surrounded by dense forests, mountains and magnificent flora and fauna .
This bathing lake is also the only natural lake in Lower Austria. The water quality has even been awarded quality class 1 – so it could hardly be better. And the water remains pleasantly cool even at the height of summer, as Lake Lunz is up to 34 meters deep.
What can you experience at the lake?
At Lake Lunz, you can go swimming for free at the bathing jetty at the northern end. However, there is also a lido for which you have to pay an entrance fee. There you will find a large sunbathing lawn and a diving tower. You can also hire a boat and sail across the water. And there are numerous restaurants, cafés and an ice cream parlor on the shores of the lake – there’s something for everyone!
If you still have energy left after swimming, be sure to visit the town of Lunz am See and the surrounding area. The small town offers various museums, while families can explore the surrounding area on the “Mostviertler Schienenradl” adventure train. And if you prefer a bit more nature, you can also hike around the lake for five kilometers.
How do you get to the bathing lake?
Lake Lunz is natural, quiet, varied and surprisingly close. If you fancy a day of swimming in the crystal-clear mountain lake, you should definitely take a trip there. It’s not too far from Vienna: it takes over two hours by public transport. You can take the train to Scheibbs and then change to a bus that will take you to Lunz am See.
However, it is easier and quicker by car. Via the Westautobahn highway, you can be directly at the lake in two hours, where you can also park your car. There is a charge for parking, but the journey is worth it – because this tranquil lake with its crystal-clear water will have you relaxing in a matter of seconds.
