The sky is cloudless, it smells of sunscreen and chips, you can hear the water rushing in the distance… A visit to an outdoor pool can be the perfect summer day – you don’t have to go to the most beautiful lakes in the area. Whether you want to swim a few laps or relax on the grass, these swimming spots have something for everyone. We have put together our – of course very subjective – selection of the best outdoor pools in Vienna. They are open from the beginning of May to mid-September.
1st Krapfenwaldbad

One of the most beautiful outdoor pools in Vienna is definitely the Krapfenwaldl. Because if you jump into the water here, you can also enjoy a stunning view over the city: it is the highest pool in Vienna and offers visitors a panoramic view over the city. However, it is also very popular on good days.
📍 Location: Krapfenwaldg. 65-73
💶 Admission: 2.60-7.60 euros
2nd Gänsehäufel lido
There is another superlative at the Gänsehäufel lido. It is the largest outdoor pool in the city! There is room for 30,000 visitors here. Incidentally, the name actually goes back to geese that were once bred here. Today, however, there’s nothing left of it – you can relax on the beach, in a nudist area and in three heated pools.
📍 Location: Moissigasse 21
💶 Admission: 2.60-7.60 euros
3rd lido on the Old Danube

At Strandbad Alte Donau you will find a 150-metre-long natural bathing beach – pure vacation feeling in the middle of Vienna! The water is regularly checked for quality, so you don’t have to worry about your bathing fun. You can jump straight into the water via the wooden jetty, and there are plenty of sports facilities and shady spots to relax.
📍 Location: Arbeiterstrandbadstraße 91, 1220 Vienna
💶 Admission: 3.50 – 6.00 euros
4th Angelibad
The Angelibad in the 21st district also offers direct access to the Danube. In a relaxed atmosphere, you can lie down on the natural pebble beach and paddle to the floating island in the river. There is a separate area for children for maximum splashing fun. And if you need more action, you can let off steam on the beach volleyball, tennis or soccer court.
📍 Location: Birnersteig, An der Oberen Alten Donau 1, 1210 Vienna
💶 Admission: 5.70 – 7.60 euros
5th Höpflerbad

The Höpflerbad is very informal. It is located on the outskirts of the city and is therefore less crowded than some of the other outdoor pools in Vienna. The slightly longer journey is made up for by the peace and quiet on site. And there is also plenty of variety: Here you’ll find a water slide, table tennis tables and volleyball courts.
📍 Location: Endresstraße 24-26
💶 Admission: 2.60-7.60 euros
6th Schafbergbad

It’s water march time at the Schafbergbad: it has the longest water slide in Vienna! So what better outdoor pool could there be for adventurous children and teenagers? It also offers a trampoline, soccer and beach volleyball.
📍 Location: Josef-Redl-Gasse 2
💶 Admission: 2.60-7.60 euros
7th Schönbrunn Baths
Bathing like the emperor? You can at the Schönbrunn Baths! “A chic tan where Emperor Franz Josef once learned to swim” is the current slogan of the baths. As you might expect, things are a little more upmarket here than in most other outdoor pools in Vienna. Nevertheless (and precisely because of this?), the pool offers everything you need for a good summer’s day. There is a sunbathing lawn and also a wellness and fitness area.
📍 Location: Schönbrunn Palace Park
💶 Admission: 11-19 euros
8th bathing ship
The Badeschiff offers even more bathing fun in the middle of the city. After all, who needs pools when you have the beautiful Danube just around the corner? The Badeschiff pool is located on the Danube Canal. Here you can not only swim next to Vienna’s most beautiful sights, but also stay here until 10 pm.
📍 Location: Schwedenplatz
💶 Admission: 7.50-9.50 euros
9th congress pool

The Kongressbad is all about the old days. It has existed since 1927 and delights families, sports enthusiasts and sun-seekers. Parts of the red and white building are even a listed building. You will find a number of swimming highlights here, such as several water slides, whirlpool loungers and a current channel. Modern swimming fun with the charm of yesteryear!
📍 Location: Julius-Meinl-Gasse 7a
💶 Admission: 2.60-7.60 euros
10th “Pirate Bay”

The sandy beach “Pirat Bucht” on the New Danube is still quite new. It’s a real summer paradise for anyone looking for a beach vacation in Vienna! The 200-metre-long sandy beach almost feels like the Caribbean. There is plenty of space to relax and sunbathe on a huge sunbathing area with poplar trees. The shallow entry into the water is also very suitable for children.
📍 Location: at the Kaisermühlendamm
💶 Admission: free
