Few places allow you to experience the tradition of summer retreats as vividly as the Bad Vöslau Thermal Spa. Nestled in the heart of a 45,000-square-meter park, a 15,000-year-old spring rises from a depth of 660 meters. What makes this place special is the water itself, as the pools are fed with completely untreated mineral water, which eliminates the need for conventional chemical additives.
A spring with imperial history
Historically, the facility looks back on milestones closely linked to the development of the Austrian spa industry. After the spring was first tapped in 1825 by Beethoven’s personal physician, the official opening of the thermal baths followed in 1873. In addition to members of the imperial family, writers such as Arthur Schnitzler also used the facility. The baths also gained significance because it was here, in the 19th century, that the first women in Austria received official swimming lessons.
Four pools nestled among pine trees and gravel
Today, the grounds are divided into architecturally and functionally distinct zones that cater to various needs for relaxation and exercise. At its heart is the Green Pool, where fresh spring water constantly bubbles up, while a natural gravel bed acts as a biological filter. Opposite it is the Blue Pool, which, with an area of over 1,000 square meters, is designed as a spacious area for swimming.
For visitors seeking visual and acoustic tranquility, the forest pool in Marienpark offers an alternative. This area is designed as a small swimming pond and surrounded by old pine trees; the water temperature here naturally fluctuates with the outside temperature. A separate, sheltered children’s pool with sunshades and sandboxes rounds out the offerings for families in the rear section of the park.
Dining and Holistic Relaxation
Beyond its bathing facilities, the resort boasts a well-established infrastructure that is partially accessible even outside the summer months. The Maital Küche offers a fusion of regional Austrian and Mediterranean cuisine year-round, with a focus on meat from the Triesting Valley and products from local winemakers. During the summer season, Kabane 21, the Eispavillon, and the Milchbar in the Föhrenwald round out the culinary offerings right on the grounds.
The expanded wellness offerings also include structured classes such as Qi Gong, which takes place on the meadows every Tuesday in the summer, as well as energetic bodywork in the castle’s own massage room. Those who wish to extend their summer getaway will find 100 historic cabins and 67 apartments on the grounds; however, due to traditionally high demand, these are booked solid well in advance. The regular bathing season runs through September 27, 2026.
