From October 22 to November 3, 2026, the nation’s capital will once again become the center of the international film world. As Austria’s largest film festival, the Viennale has been delighting thousands of guests since 1960. The 64th edition promises 13 days filled with film premieres, retrospectives, and exciting discussions in several historic movie theaters.
Diverse Program and Ticket Pre-sales
The festival offers a diverse program featuring works by renowned female directors as well as promising emerging talents. Single tickets cost €11.50, though discounts are available with the “Vermehrt Schönes!” ticket starting at €8.50. While many titles won’t be finalized until the program is released on October 13 at 8:00 p.m., the theme centered on the historical whale already promises to explore profound topics.
The popular series at the Austrian Film Museum are also firmly established. Since experience has shown that advance ticket sales trigger a huge rush, you should mark October 17 at 10 a.m. in red on your calendar. In addition, starting that day, you can purchase tickets directly online or on-site before the screenings sell out.

Historic venues and a lively atmosphere

The Gartenbaukino at Parkring 12 traditionally serves as the main venue, but the Stadtkino at the Künstlerhaus, the Metro Kinokulturhaus, and the Filmcasino will also open their doors. In addition, you can experience exclusive screenings at the cozy Schikaneder, which has a unique atmosphere all its own. During the festival, the lobbies transform into lively meeting places for expert discussions after the screenings.
What began as a small gathering has since become a well-established cultural institution. Nevertheless, it retains its laid-back character, as the exchange of ideas always takes center stage. The event will conclude on November 3, 2026, with a festive awards ceremony.
That’s why it’s worth studying the program in advance so you can secure tickets for your favorite films in time. But first, you should figure out which theaters are along your route so your movie marathon goes off without a hitch.
