Vienna’s summer movie season just got even better, because a special open-air cinema is bringing iconic films to the big screen with admission completely free— 0 euros. WIENXTRA Cinemagic is organizing this event, called Sunset Cinema Vienna, in cooperation with VOLXkino, with a program tailored specifically to teens and young adults. Although the first screenings in June are already over, there are still some real highlights in store for you on your picnic blankets in July and September.
That’s why you should mark the remaining evenings in red on your calendar. Meanwhile, the mobile cinema is moving on to the popular Danube Canal hotspot. There, at the end of July, you can enjoy two absolute cult classics of film history under the open sky in a relaxed atmosphere— weather permitting.
The action continues in the 21st district at USUS am Wasser. On Tuesday, July 28, the legendary coming-of-age classic “The Breakfast Club” will screen at 9:00 p.m. in the original English version. On Wednesday, July 29, the satirical high school comedy “But I’m a Cheerleader” will follow, also at 9:00 p.m. in German, ensuring plenty of variety.

Late-Summer Cinema in the Seventh District
After July’s film series wraps up, the open-air cinema will take a short break before returning in September for the grand finale. The venue for this will be the cozy Weghuberpark in the 7th district. Due to the earlier sunset, screenings here will start at 8:00 p.m. each night.
On Tuesday, September 1, you’ll get to see the action-packed sci-fi reboot “Star Trek.” On Wednesday, September 2, the comedy “Bibi & Tina 2” follows, while on Thursday, September 3, the fan-favorite highlight “Mamma Mia! – Sing Along” will be shown—and singing along at the top of your lungs is actually encouraged.
Since all screenings are completely free, you don’t need a ticket. Be sure to bring your own blanket, though, as there’s no seating available on site. After all, it’s precisely this laid-back picnic vibe that makes Vienna’s movie nights so charming.
