When people want to see wild animals, they usually think of traditional zoos right away. But in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, not far from Rappottenstein Castle, there’s a completely different way to observe animals. Here, it’s not just about putting animals on display, but about genuine animal welfare and rehabilitation.
Five adult brown bears are currently roaming the undergrowth in a 24,000-square-meter forest area. All of the animals come from inadequate living conditions and have finally found a life suited to their needs in the so-called Arbesbach Bear Forest.
An animal welfare project

The animal welfare organization Vier Pfoten has been operating this sanctuary since 1998. The bears Brumca, Dunbar, Erich, Felix, and Mici can bathe, dig, or retreat into caves here at any time. The grounds were generously expanded between 2023 and 2025 to create even more space.
You’ll stroll along a partially accessible loop trail through the facility and watch the animals foraging or taking a nap. If you want to get a closer look, it’s best to join one of the guided tours. These start at 2:00 PM on weekdays and additionally at 10:30 AM on weekends and holidays.

A destination for families and their four-legged friends

The informative tours with the ExBÄRten (as the expert local guides call themselves) cost 7.00 euros for adults and 5.00 euros for children. Plan on about 1 to 1.5 hours for the guided tour, during which you’ll receive very detailed background information on bear behavior.
The rest of the family is also well taken care of on the grounds. In addition to a playground with climbing structures and a small low ropes course, there is even a dedicated dog zone. Your furry companions are welcome on a leash throughout the entire park.
If you’re hungry after your walk, graba quick snack at the kiosk or enjoy a hearty meal at the neighboring Gasthof Kolm. A stop at the souvenir shop with regional products or a visit to Rappottenstein Castle will round out your trip to the Waldviertel nicely.
