Anyone looking for a nature getaway to go camping often seeks out clear water and shady forests—especially in the summer heat. We’ve found the perfect destination for you. It’s tucked away in the Upper Austrian Kalkalpen. The trip is well worth it, because the so-called Gleinkersee warms up to 25 degrees Celsius in midsummer— not too hot . Plus, the emerald-green lake covers a total of 13 hectares.
Camping on the emerald-green shore
Located at an elevation of 800 meters, this small campground is open from May through the end of September. If you’re traveling with a trailer, you’ll have access to well-maintained restroom facilities right on the water. As you enjoy fresh organic pastries for breakfast in the morning, you’ll gaze out at steep rock faces. Although the banks drop off steeply, a flat sunbathing area awaits you to the north.

Consistent organic cuisine instead of deep-frying oil
At the adjacent inn, you won’t find classic fries and schnitzel, even though that would be the obvious choice for a typical lakeside spot. Instead, the menu features vegan and gluten-free dishes as well as meat from the inn’s own farm. What’s more, rare Turopolje pigs and Puster Valley Sprinzen graze in the meadow right next door. So you know exactly where the regional organic food on your plates comes from.
Forest skateparks and hiking trails
If you need a little exercise after dinner, there’s a large high-rope course next to the sunbathing lawn. There, you can zip across the grounds on Flying Fox zip lines. Experienced hikers can also set off directly from the shore on the trail to the Dümlerhütte.
Since the area has been a designated nature reserve since 1965, special attention is paid to environmental protection. That’s why the operators ask that you not leave any trash behind during your visit. After all, we all want this peaceful spot to remain a great destination for outings for a long time to come.
