If you’re interested in historic architecture and expansive natural landscapes, you don’t necessarily have to travel to England. About 14 kilometers east of Krems stands Grafenegg Castle, which was radically redesigned in the Tudor style in the 19th century. This imposing estate traces its history back to 1294, before it took on its current appearance.
Historic Castle Meets Nature
The complex is surrounded by a 32-hectare landscaped park, home to giant trees up to 250 years old. An old castle courtyard also serves as a reminder of the past, as the complex was originally designed as a fortified moated castle. However , the austere castle structure has since given way to a more open landscape, allowing you to take a leisurely stroll along the paths of the sprawling arboretum.
If you’d like to tour the interior, be sure to visit the ornate Knights’ Hall with its coffered ceiling. The colorful castle chapel also impresses with its late-Gothic winged altar from 1491. It’s worth taking a closer look at the walls, where you’ll discover colorful historicist tiled stoves and fine wood paneling.
Although parts of the valuable building structure were severely damaged in the postwar period, the historic state rooms now shine once again with their original charm following an extensive restoration by the state of Lower Austria.

Culture and Music Under the Open Sky
In addition to its architecture, the site is now an important venue for cultural events, as the striking Wolkenturm has been used since 2007 as a modern open-air stage for 1,700 guests. It features an acoustically optimized open-air arena that serves as an alternative venue for the neighboring auditorium. The range of offerings has since been expanded following the grand opening of the new Rudolf-Buchbinder Hall in the historic riding school in May 2026.
A visit is especially appealing now in late summer, as it’s the perfect time for a stroll in the shade of the old trees. If you’re planning a guided tour, you can join one on weekends at 2:00 p.m. through September 6. It’s therefore advisable to arrive early; after all, tickets are available on-site at the castle shop without prior registration.
