When people think of a sea of purple flowers , southern France usually comes to mind. While there aren’t any vast fields near the German capital, there is a European rarity to see. Near Maissau, over 2,000 lavender plants have been growing right in the town’s public spaces since 2007.
The entire project is maintained by local residents, as the plant is ideally suited to the climate. The real highlight is the lovingly landscaped lavender show garden, which is now home to over 120 different varieties. This means you can explore this diversity all year round with free admission.
The best time to visit is during the main blooming season from June to August. This is when all the shades of purple, as well as white and pink varieties, are on full display. In addition, the entire area is filled with an intense fragrance, making this outing an excellent way to relax.

Relaxation in the show garden and along the stream

In addition to the lavender, however, there are other spots to discover in the village. Right next to the garden, you’ll find a water lily garden and a lovingly designed stream. The latter symbolizes the village community, as the names of the families have been immortalized on engraved stone slabs placed in the stream.
For families, local parents have built a dedicated children’s playground. And if you’d like to learn about the work of local winemakers, take a stroll through the demonstration vineyard. There, the winemakers showcase 13 different grape varieties along a demonstration row.
Culture and Hiking Trails Around the Village

Finally, don’t miss the local Unterdürnbach Castle. The former Renaissance building now serves as a rectory and hosts the Manhartsberg Castle Concerts in the summer. It’s best to visit during the week, when you can fully enjoy the peace and quiet of the village.
So it’s well worth the trip if you want to spend a relaxing day. However, there are no products for sale in the village; the plantings serve purely to beautify the town.
