Liechtenstein Castle sits majestically atop a rocky ridge on the edge of the Vienna Woods, just outside Vienna in Maria Enzersdorf. Its roots stretch far back in time. Around the year 1130, the fortress was built by Hugo von Liechtenstein, making it the ancestral seat of the world-famous princely house of the same name.
A fortress with centuries of history
Over the centuries, the complex has had an eventful history. It was severely damaged during the Ottoman sieges of 1529 and 1683 and remained in ruins for a long time. It was not until the 19th century that the princely family awakened the castle from its slumber. It was rebuilt in the historicist spirit of the Neo-Romanesque style, giving it its current, distinctive appearance. Today, the structure fascinatingly combines the authentic Romanesque style of the Middle Ages with the romantic idealization of the 19th century.
Exploration and medieval experiences
There’s good news for history buffs and day-trippers. Liechtenstein Castle is open to the public and can be toured as part of exciting, expert-led guided tours. Since the complex remains privately owned by the princely house to this day, a tour is only possible with a guide. Inside the castle, visitors are immersed in the past.
Visitors stroll through the impressive 12th-century castle chapel, marvel at historic living quarters, and view precious furniture, weapons, and art treasures. A special highlight is the battlement walk, which offers a deep insight into medieval defensive architecture.
The surrounding Föhrenberge Nature Park also invites visitors to enjoy long hikes. From the fortress’s observation decks, you can also enjoy a fantastic panoramic view across the Vienna Basin all the way to the nation’s capital. A visit here thus perfectly combines gripping history, architecture, and a nature experience.
