Crystal-clear water of drinking-water quality awaits you just under 2.5 hours from Vienna at the northern foot of the Höllengebirge. Since the bed of the Vorderen Langbathsee near Ebensee consists of light-colored limestone, the water shimmers in bright shades of green or turquoise when the sun shines.
Turquoise-green mountain water and free sunbathing areas
The protected Alpine lake lies at an elevation of 664 meters in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria. Although the lake is one of the cooler swimming spots, the water temperature rises to 22 to 25 degrees in the summer.
The state of Upper Austria provides a 4,000-square-meter sunbathing area on the eastern shore free of charge. After cooling off in the refreshing water, you can relax there or stop for a bite to eat at the cozy Langbathseestüberl.
Dogs are not allowed in the water at the public swimming areas to maintain high hygiene standards. However, you can walk your four-legged friends on a leash along the flat path along the shore.

Imperial summer retreats and rare underwater worlds
Even Emperor Franz Joseph greatly appreciated this place and had a hunting lodge built on the western shore in 1870. Furthermore, the entire lake has been a nature reserve since 1965 to protect the habitat of native noble crayfish and lake char.
Since visibility underwater is excellent, recreational divers also appreciate the cool 33-meter depth. Although diving is only permitted within a 250-meter-wide area, the sunken tree trunks provide a fascinating backdrop.
An easy circular hike for the whole family
If you prefer to get around on foot, you can combine the outing with an eight-kilometer run. The flat path leads directly to the Hinterer Langbathsee in a 45-minute walk.
Be sure to note, however, that a strict fire ban is currently in effect in all forested areas of the region to prevent the risk of wildfires. In addition, a large parking lot is available on the eastern shore, right off the state highway. While swimming is a major attraction in the summer, the ice in winter is also ideal for curling.
