Just under 50 minutes from Vienna stands a structure that has towered over the Wulka Valley since the 14th century. Initially, the Lords of Mattersdorf protected the area, before Prince Nikolaus Esterházy took over the estate in 1622 and commissioned Italian masters to expand it. Over the next three centuries, the princes collected precious family treasures, transforming the site into a magnificent Baroque castle. Because of this history, Forchtenstein Castle is still regarded today as the cultural center of the region.
Baroque Cabinet of Curiosities and Rare Silver Furniture
But the greatest treasure lies in the Upper Castle, because Prince Paul I used the fortress as a vault. There, the rooms remained protected from damage, so you can visit Europe’s last Baroque cabinet of curiosities at its original location. This includes rare silver furniture from 1665 as well as a 50-meter-deep castle well.
The ancestral gallery is equally fascinating, as it displays hundreds of historical portraits. Moreover, it features a portrait of Vlad III Tepes, who served as the inspiration for Count Dracula. Today, this collection constitutes one of the largest Baroque galleries in Europe.

Europe’s Largest Private Armory
Although the structure once had to fend off wars, Europe’s largest private armory now houses a fascinating collection of militaria. Here you can see equipment spanning four centuries, muskets , and original cannonballs. Furthermore, the exhibition space in the barbican opened in July 2026, showcasing historical firefighting equipment that illustrates thecastle’s former fire safety measures .

All in all, a visit is highly recommended if you want to experience history up close. There are various guided tours and sightseeing options for all ages, and even a spine-tingling evening program awaits you. While three guided tours take place daily from May through September, sightseeing tours are available on weekends during the winter.
