Summer is showing its hottest side and calling for a chance to cool off in nature. If you miss the ocean, Styria offers an excellent alternative: our local mountain lakes. If you’re not a fan of cold water, you should take a closer look at the Enn Valley. Just under 2.5 hours’ drive from Vienna, a real gem awaits you. Lake Putterersee is considered the warmest alpine moor lake in Styria.
Thanks to its unique location , the water heats up quickly , reaching temperatures of up to 27 degrees in midsummer. Furthermore, the lake is not fed by icy springs but is a historic natural biotope. This means you’ll be swimming here in sulfur-rich moor water. It may look a bit unusual at first, but it’s a real treat for your skin.
Action and relaxation by the water
All around the shore, you’ll find a spacious sunbathing area that offers plenty of room for all swimmers. While those seeking peace and quiet relax by the reeds, the rest can burn off some energy with sports. A floating island and two diving platforms are available for your use. If you prefer a more peaceful experience, you can rent a classic rowboat, for example. There are also stand-up paddleboards available for €18 per hour, so you can comfortably paddle around the lake.

While swimming is the main attraction, you won’t get bored on land either. There, table soccer and a beach volleyball court await active visitors. If it cools off in the late afternoon, the lakeside resort offers a great bonus : its on-site lake sauna, which is included in the admission price free of charge three days a week. After you’ve really worked up a sweat, you can jump right into the mountain lake to cool off.

So when you’re relaxing on your beach towel, you won’t just see the majestic Grimming mountain panorama in the background. With a little luck, you might even spot some local wildlife along the shore.
