The beginning of November also marks the start of the Christmas market season in Wein. Over the course of the month, the many Christmas markets and Christmas villages will gradually open, meaning that evenings and weekends can finally be spent drinking mulled wine or punch between the beautifully decorated huts. We give you an overview of a selection of Vienna’s Christmas markets and when each one opens.
1st Schönbrunn Christmas Market

The Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace is the first to open this year. You can get into the Christmas spirit here as early as the beginning of November. 95 huts await you this year, where you can store and feast. If you like it more active, venture onto the ice skating rink or try your hand at curling. New this year is the Lindt experience world “Golden Christmas” in the center of the market, which offers a wonderful photo spot for your memories of the market. In the palace park you can also admire the unique light installation “Imperial Lights”.

2nd Christmas Village on Stephansplatz

Just two days after Schönbrunn, the next market opens its doors. In the middle of the Old Town, against the impressive backdrop of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, this magical Christmas market awaits you with traditional delicacies and all kinds of arts and crafts to browse through. 10 of the 43 stalls are food stalls, at the others you can do your first Christmas shopping or give yourself a present.

3rd Christmas market on Rathausplatz

Once again this year, you can expect lots of highlights at the Christmas market in front of the illuminated town hall. In addition to the numerous stalls, there is a lot to see and experience here. You can watch the sea of lights and the colorful hustle and bustle from above from the Ferris wheel, do your laps on the ice rink and prove your love under the heart tree. From November 28 to December 23, the Tower Blowing takes place daily and you can admire up to 70 nativity scenes on the Nativity Scene Trail.

4th Old Vienna Christmas Market
The first Altwiener Christkindlmarkt is a traditional event. Once again this year, it impresses with its extensive program and its range of glass decorations, ceramics and handicrafts. If you find a gift here, you can have it wrapped directly at the Packerl-Service and do something good with it, as the proceeds go to PRO RARE Austria. On the Punch and Judy stage, there is a constantly changing puppet show for children and you can look forward to arts and crafts demonstrations and a wide range of music. After the end of the Christmas season, you can look forward to the Easter market, which will take place here again in spring.

5th Christmas market in the courtyard
A Christmas market was already held here in the 19th century and the tradition continues. Around 70 huts await you at the Christmas market at the courtyard, providing you with handcrafted treasures as well as culinary delicacies. If you would like to take a piece of the Christmas market home with you, you can buy a souvenir mug. You can use it to enjoy mulled wine, punch, hot chocolate or simply tea at home.

6th Christmas Village Uni Campus
The Christmas village on the university campus attracts visitors with an exciting program for young and old. On Tuesdays, students benefit from discounted prices for hot drinks and DJs ensure a good atmosphere. You can prove your brains at the Christmas puzzle rally or get physically active on the curling rink. For children there is a Punch and Judy show, a bakery and face painting. The magician in the red tailcoat will delight you with his tricks and on December 6, Santa Claus himself will drop by.

7th Belvedere Palace Christmas Village

Not only Schönbrunn, but also Belvedere offers a Christmas market with a palace backdrop. Here, too, you can store to your heart’s content and admire the arts and crafts. Sample the numerous delicacies and hot drinks and enjoy the view of the baroque palace with its festive lighting.

8th winter market at the Riesenradplatz

The ultimate Christmas market fun can of course be experienced at the Prater. Not only the atmospheric stalls where you can buy gifts and treats await you here, but also the usual Prater rides, making a trip here an absolute winter pleasure. This year’s motto is “The Prater rocks” and the musical program is just as big. 35 live concerts await you with a musical mix of soul, pop and gospel. There will be a big free party on New Year’s Eve and, as always, the traditional New Year’s concert awaits you on January 1st, which will also be broadcast live.
