Just under a 2.5-hour drive from Vienna, the Gesäuse National Park is home to a popular recreational area for families. Although we explored the sprawling grounds primarily with summer in mind, a visit is worthwhile throughout the entire season. Since the really hot days are just around the corner, you should plan your trip now, before the popular weekends are fully booked.
Adventures on the Water: Canoe Canal and Gold Panning

Although the mountain streams are almost too cold for a traditional swimming trip, the cool water is fortunately the main attraction here. Families zoom through several locks in small canoes, creating a real rafting experience . There are also interactive water play areas, a treehouse in the water, and a steep canoe slide. Afterward, little treasure hunters pan for real gold in the sand.
Aside from that, there’s plenty of activity away from the water. While the kids zoom around the track in go-karts, the brave ones conquer the tall climbing tower or Dragon Island. Also on site are a cable car, a hamster wheel, and even a pony stable, aquariums, and a biotope pond.

Fun in the Rain at the Hydrian House

If the weather in the mountains takes a turn for the worse, you don’t have to head home right away. That’s because there are covered activity stations ready for rainy hours. In the so-called Hydrian House, you can do crafts without getting your feet wet or explore the local aquariums.
All the important information for your visit

Because the entire area is shaded by trees, it stays pleasantly cool even on hot days. Still, be sure to pack your swimsuits, towels, and a change of clothes. But don’t worry— clean changing rooms are available on site. We also recommend sturdy sneakers for the terrain.
After the action, the on-site alpine hut serves hearty regional delicacies. Finally, you can round out the day at Kassegg Castle, just five minutes away. This easily turns a day trip into a relaxing mini-vacation.
